Isla Shailer’s poster shines at 2025 ‘Hear Us Out’ exhibition
In May 2025, Wintec graphic design student and DSGNR associate Isla Shailer’s culture-challenging poster was selected for the 2025 'Hear Us Out' International Poster Exhibition.
Project overview
The 'Hear Us Out' public good poster project, launched in 2023.
It is a collaboration between Wintec School of Media Arts and five international tertiary institutions, including Singapore Polytechnic and Northumbria University Newcastle.
It invites students to create posters that visually interpret the wisdom of older generations, fostering intergenerational and cross-cultural connections.
The design brief asked students to convey one piece of advice from an elder in their community, using 20 words or less, within a set format and colour palette.
Wintec design tutor Luke McConnell, who has developed the project concept over several years, emphasises its non-commercial purpose.
“The project aims to foster inclusivity by amplifying the voices of the elderly in our city through posters,” he says.
“Posters communicate to a public audience in a way other mediums cannot.”
Isla’s poster design
As a third-year Bachelor of Design student at Wintec | Te Pūkenga, Isla created a poster inspired by her grandmother Joy’s life observations.
Her work, styled as a redacted secret document with bold typography and stark contrasts, confronts viewers and challenges them to reflect on modern culture’s impact on creativity, freedom, and history.
International recognition
Isla’s poster was selected as one of approximately 60 works from participating schools to be exhibited internationally, showcasing her skill in graphic design and storytelling.
The curated exhibition features submissions from institutions including ADM School of Art, Design and Media (NTU Singapore), Universidad Técnica del Norte (Ecuador), and Universitas Pelita Harapan (Indonesia).
Isla works with DSGNR, providing creative services complementing our commercial and residential interior design business.
